Day 28 | Thursday, December 25th | Focus: Peace
Reflection: Am I putting limits on a sovereign God?
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
[Luke 2:15-20]
The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay tending their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord;
That hath made heaven and earth of naught,
And with His blood mankind hath bought.
[Traditional 13th century English carol]

The birth of Christ is the exact moment the Kingdom of God meets the kingdoms of this world. Astonishingly, the Kingdom of God comes by way of weakness, insignificance, and vulnerability. This meek baby laying in what was likely a feeding trough was, then and there, the King of world.
Thank You, Father God, for this true story that we get to remember and celebrate each year. Please teach us what it means to be weak as You were weak—that we might have Your character reigning in our hearts and minds. Praise You that Your power works best in weakness (2 Corinthians 12). When the world tries to teach us otherwise, please wake us to this truth each and every day. Amen.
